I have some experience with grant writing, not the day in and day out some of you have, but the grassroots organizational experience of someone who has started nonprofits from scratch. I've done the fundraising events, gotten the grants in dribs & drabs, clarified the mission & vision for a group, trained volunteers to serve, educated communities about a topic or need then hung on for the roller coaster ride.
With that said, after 15 years, I've transitioned to serving the nonprofits in my community through consulting services that support their goals. The current economic trends are causing nonprofits to look at new ways of doing business and sometimes that takes a new perspective, someone from the outside to look in and suggest what could be done differently.
My business is focused on helping nonprofits integrate their existing marketing materials (if they exist) with online resources, like websites, blogs, social media and video. No matter where you are in the process, I can help you clarify your goals and create a plan to reach them. In addition, if your group wants to go after some of the US stimulus funding available, you may want to consider how "green" your activities are and how to improve that area.
How does this relate to grant writing? If your group wants to be successful in the competitive atmosphere for grant funding in the 21st Century, you need to fine tune your communication skills. You may have to raise matching funds to apply for some grant sources and having an integrated marketing strategy that reaches greater numbers can make that task faster and easier. You may have blips in the year where you need to just raise enough for the electric bill to hold you over... wouldn't that be easier if you could send a single message that reached thousands with your plea for assistance!?!
